Describe
---------
I currently administer a TCP/IP based university computer network spanning 25 subnets, servers, switches and routers interconnected on fibre, wireless and ethernet cabling. The network provides both intranet and internet services to about 30,000 students, 3,000 staff and four research institutes.

ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES
======================================

A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and
responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data
networking activities in your country*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
My current employer is the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where I head the Internet Services Team. The University is in the fore front of ICT education, deployment and usage in Nigeria. As the Team Lead of its Internet Services, I am directly responsible for maintaining and configuration of Indoor WAN Equipment & Support (DVB, Modem, Router); Proxy Services Academic & Commercial; Bandwidth Management Solutions and NOC Premises Management & Server Infrastructure. Nationally, in 2010, under I partook as a resource person in the wireless training of some selected staff of Nigeria universities under a programme jointly developed by the Abdus-Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste Italy and Nigeria University Commission.

A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems,
networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization
to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The university network is a structured hierarchical star. 95% of the servers run on Mandriva and Centos. The university is connected to the Internet via trans-atlantic fibre cable (8/8Mbps) and VSAT (11.5/2.5bps). The third link to provide redundancy will come up in March.

How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am applying for Scalable Network Infrastructure. As the head of the Internet services, one of my core duty is to provide a highly resilient and scalable Internet services that support the academic need of the university especially her online services. The university just acquired a backup bandwidth from another ISP that necessitated a major change in the university network setup and also a need to begin to re-assess the existing routing structure to cater for the new internet gateway. The track I apply for is therefore in line with the challenges I am facing on my network which include routing issues, centralised management of device configurations and perimeter security.

How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, I intend acquiring knowledge in managing WAN networks on multi-provider connectivity. A major challenge for me and the university presently is the switching between the two Internet providers which is done manually. This does not allow for the optimal use of existing bandwidth since only a link can be used at a time. I will also be assisting in setting up some community based Internet access and training some school children under a town-gown project I am involved in.

If you have previously attended AfNOG or INET Workshops for Developing Countries
Year and track you attended
---------------------------
2009: Scalable Internet Services

A precise description of how you have used the training you have received in the past
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. After attending the Campus Networking class in Cairo 2009, I came back a change person. That change birth the re-organisation of the university subnet structure. I introduced the use of VLAN on my network. In doing this, the university saved resources in server acquisition, new set of skills were developed among the staff that I handed over to.
2. I also implemented some IP aggregation at the distribution layer of my network making the routing rules on the network simpler and tidy.
3. As a fall out of Cairo 99, I began the process of acquiring our own IP. The process is now at the advanced stage with Afrinic.
4. I have on volunteer base assisted in setting up network access for one of the research institute in the university - the National Centre for Technology Management.
5. I have also facilitated four trainings in area of network security for the office of National Security Adviser, Nigeria police, military and academia.
6. I have also conducted in-house trainings to younger colleagues and encouraged their participation in local trainings.

The significant advances in networking which have occurred in your country specifically
because of your knowledge and effort
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Obafemi Awolowo University network case study I presented at the ICTP-AUST-NUC workshop has helped shaped decisions in some universities on approach to network setup and bandwidth management.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
======================

Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the
workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Requested aid to cover the attendance fees.

Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your
organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other
sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a need for automating redundancy at the core of my network. This training will present me the options available to achieve this, ultimately leading to seamless Internet services to the university.

How will the finances be paid?
